Flory Nye-Clement

Cath’s exquisite page reminded me of childhood explorations in the woods of suburban Maryland. I already loved nature and spent many hours observing and listening (and catching poison ivy).

I knew when the mayflowers and violets bloomed and where the birds nested. Fast forward to the San Francisco Bay Area, where I moved in 1972. I’m still a nature lover and observer.

California’s wealth of flora and fauna provides me with great pleasure, especially the fresh grasses and native wildflowers in springtime. “California Spring” features a California Poppy and a blue lupine over a field of new grass.

In 1868, John Muir described California’s Central Valley as "splashed with ripples in flower gems," referring to the vast fields of wildflowers, including poppies and lupines. Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve in Los Angeles County comprises a small remnant of what Muir described.

I used Procreate to realize my own vision.
