Pawtrait in Tones

Materials Needed

● Acrylic paints (warm and cool primaries, black, white, and a few earth tones)
● Pre-gessoed canvas or heavy paper (A4 or similar) You will also need extra paper for working out value ranges in color
● Paintbrushes (flat, round, and detail brushes)
● Palette knives
● Palette for mixing
● Rags and water containers
● Reference images of dogs (provided or personal choice)
● Blue colored pencil for drawing
● 2B or 3B graphite pencil
● Black posca or thick felt tip pen and white posca
● The app Vector Q - download prior to the workshop (it is a free app)

Course overview
In this class you will:
● Understand how to translate colors into tonal values.
● Learn how to mix and match colors based on their tonal equivalence.
● Develop brushwork techniques for expressive and structured portraiture.
● Gain confidence in creating a dog portrait with a limited tonal palette.

Joan Martin

Joan Martin, an artist and high school art teacher residing on the tropical east coast of Durban, South Africa, immerses herself in mixed media artworks that reflect intense curiosity and creative courage. 


She enjoys experimenting with tools beyond her control and splashing materials to create unique creations, emphasizing the importance of making mistakes for true learning. 


Participating in local and international group exhibitions, Joan also leads workshops, presents art talks, teaches online classes, and contributes as a curator for local galleries.
